When more than half of the tooth’s biting surface is damaged a dentist will often use an inlay or onlay
What are inlays and onlays?
Inlays and onlays are restorations similar to general fillings for decayed and damaged teeth that can be made from porcelain, gold, or composite resin.
They are made externally in a dental laboratory based off impressions and then bonded to the damaged area of the tooth, instead of being shaped internally inside the mouth.
What are inlays?
An inlay is used when the damage is too much for a simple filling to fix. Inlays are used to restore the cusp of the tooth, which is the top chewing surface of the tooth.
What are onlays?
An onlay is a more substantial reconstruction, very similar to the inlay, however the onlay restores both the chewing surface and extends out over one or more of the cusps of the tooth. Onlays are used when there isn’t enough damage requiring a dental crown.
What is the inlay and onlay procedure?
You will begin with an initial consultation at Curtis Couch, where we will check your mouth and decide whether an inlay or onlay is suitable for you.
If treatment progresses, one of our dentists will begin treatment by removing the decayed and infected area of the tooth using a dental drill.
Following this, your tooth will be cleaned, and an impression will be taken. This impression will be used to craft an inlay or onlay that will fit your cavity perfectly.
If you are not receiving your permanent inlay or onlay the same day, a temporary filling will be placed in the cavity.
When your permanent inlay or onlay is made, your dentist will bond it in place using a strong resin. This will restore your tooths full function and esthetics.
What are inlays and onlays made from?
Traditionally, gold has been the material of choice for inlays and onlays. However, in recent years, porcelain has become increasingly popular due to its strength and color, which can potentially match the natural color of your teeth.
Benefits of inlays and onlays?
Traditional fillings can reduce the strength of a natural tooth by up to 50 percent.
Whereas the alternative, inlays and onlays are made from durable material and bonded directly onto the tooth using special high-strength resins, can actually increase the strength of a tooth by up to 75 percent.
Since inlays and onlays are so durable and strong, they can last from 10 to 30 years, depending on how much care is taken.
Other advantages include:
- Offer a natural appearance
- More natural contours over standard fillings
- Custom-built in a laboratory
- Less sensitivity
