To support our principal dentist Dr. Curtis Couch, we have employed seven highly qualified, professional dental hygienists to help care for our patient’s smiles.
Why is basic oral hygiene so important?
It is a startling fact that adults over 35 years of age lose more teeth to periodontal (gum) disease than that from cavities and decay! Whilst three quarters of adults are affected by this disease at some time in their life, this is a statistic that we can change! At our dental practice located in Thousand Oaks we know that one of the best ways to prevent the development of cavities and periodontal disease is to employ a regular oral maintenance program that includes good tooth brushing and flossing techniques performed twice daily.
What is periodontal disease and decay caused by?
Both of these oral diseases are caused by bacterial plaque, which is a substance that constantly forms on your teeth. Through regular brushing and flossing you can remove this plaque and help prevent the development of tooth decay and periodontal disease.
Why does plaque affect teeth?
Plaque is generated by the secretions made by microscopic bacteria on your teeth, and if this is not removed plaque can accumulate on your teeth to create a hard tartar. This tartar is virtually impossible to remove without professional assistance from a hygienist or dentist. If left, this tartar can erode the enamel of your teeth, making the patients susceptible to cavities, caries and infected dental pulp.
What is periodontal disease?
The bacteria found in plaque produce toxins that irritate the gums, and this can cause the gum tissue to become red, swollen and even bleed! If this process continues the gums can begin to separate from the teeth causing pockets to form. As the disease progresses it can cause gum tissue and jaw bone material to deteriorate – which in turn can lead to tooth loss.
What other factors can negatively impact on my oral health?
• Clenching and grinding teeth
• Poor nutrition

As one of the greatest advancements in orthodontics to date, Invisalign offers patients a removable and virtually transparent alternative to traditional metal braces.
For many years, patients have put off seeking treatment to correct their smile due to an aversion to traditional metal braces. With the advent of Invisalign this has all changed, as it offers a removable and virtually transparent alternative the fits a patient’s lifestyle unlike any system seen before.
How does Invisalign work?
In contrast to traditional orthodontic systems that use wire and brackets to straighten patient’s smiles, Invisalign utilizes a series of transparent aligners in order to gently move teeth into position. At our dental practice located in Thousand Oaks, we will give you your first set of aligners and you will return to our practice every few weeks to upgrade your aligners to the next set in the series.
Who is Invisalign suitable for?
Invisalign is most suitable for patients who have minor overcrowding and do not wish to undertake full orthodontic treatment. It can be a great solution for busy professionals as the aligners can be removed for important meetings and events. Furthermore, Invisalign has been a popular solution amongst celebrities such as Justin Beiber and Katherine Heigl, as this orthodontic system is virtually invisible to those around you.
What are the benefits of the Invisalign system?
Invisalign offers a range of benefits over traditional orthodontic systems:
• The system can be easily removed at any time
• Patients can maintain their regular oral hygiene routine by simply removing their aligners
• Unlike traditional systems, no diet restrictions apply
• Aligners can be removed for photographs
• Unlike braces, there are no wires or brackets to irritate your gums
• The aligners can even be used to deliver professional teeth whitening gel
It is important to note that your aligners must be worn most hours of the day every day, and your diligence (or lack thereof) will have a dramatic impact on your treatment times and overall outcomes achieved.

Are you afraid of the dentist? At Dr. Curtis Couch’s practice located in Thousand Oaks, we cater to cowards with our sedation dentistry options.
Dental phobia, or fear of the dentist is more common than you may think, and if you or a loved one suffers from this concern, at Curtis Couch D.D.S. located in Thousand Oaks we offer sedation dentistry options to help anxious patients receive the dental care they want and need.Sedation dentistry was developed to serve two purposes:
1) For use during surgical or invasive procedures – such as dental implants or complex extractions.
2) To ensure that every dental visit is as comfortable as possible – even for anxious patients.
At his dental practice located in Thousand Oaks, Dr. Curtis Couch offers anxious patients nitrous oxide to ensure that their dental appointment runs as smoothly as possible.
What is Nitrous Oxide?
Nitrous oxide is a sweet- smelling, irritant free, colorless gas which is delivered to patients via an inhalant device to allow them to feel completely comfortable throughout treatment. This tool has been the primary means of sedation dentistry for many years and has proven to be safe as the patient receives 50-70% oxygen in conjunction with no less than 30% nitrous oxide. During this form of sedation patients are able to breathe on their own and remain in control of all of their bodily functions.
What are the benefits of nitrous oxide as opposed to other methods?
Nitrous oxide offers many benefits over other sedation methods such as:
• There are no hangover like after affects involved
• Inhalation sedation has no side effects on your heart and lungs
• This form of sedation can effectively minimize gagging
• It works in as little as two minutes
• Patients are able to drive themselves home after an appropriate recovery time
Are there any circumstances where nitrous oxide will not be appropriate for me?
Nitrous oxide is not recommended if you have been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and although there are few other contraindications in regards to this treatment, you may not wish to use this sedation option if you suffer from:
• Exotic chest problems
• A cold
• Difficulties breathing
Will Nitrous Oxide give me the giggles and send me crazy?
This sedation option is designed to make you feel relaxed throughout your dental procedure, but with that said some patients do report the following symptoms:
• Mild lightheaded feeling
• Slight hallucinations
• Uncontrollable laughter
The affects differ from patient to patient, but most people report that they simply experience a feeling of calm.

At his dental practice located in Thousand Oaks, Dr. Curtis Couch has become renown for creating natural-looking beautiful smiles with his unique approach to cosmetic dentistry
It is human nature to appreciate the beauty of a good looking smile, and thanks to advancements in cosmetic dentistry a beautiful smile is in reach of most people – despite the toll that lifestyle habits, trauma and disease may have taken on your oral health and appearance.
Not all cosmetic dental treatments are made the same…
Contrary to popular belief, it does matter which cosmetic dentist you select to enhance your smile. With home job teeth whitening horror stories running rife and cheap unnatural looking veneer treatments hitting the market, it is highly important that patients shop around carefully to select the most appropriate cosmetic dentist. With more than 20 years’ experience in the dental profession, Dr. Curtis Couch has established a sterling reputation particularly when it comes to the results achieved by his cosmetic dental treatments.
Using an experienced eye in conjunction with the perfect blend of art and science, Dr. Curtis Couch offers the following cosmetic dental treatments:
This procedure can be used to mask the appearance of chipped, cracked, discolored or misaligned teeth, and is an entry level alternative to high end cosmetic dental treatments such as porcelain veneers. The teeth are gently prepared for this procedure by lightly etching the surface of each tooth and applying a bonding liquid. After this stage a plastic resin is applied and sculpted into an aesthetically pleasing shape by Dr. Curtis Couch. Once you are both happy with the appearance of your new smile and the resin is set; the bonding is trimmed, smoothed and polished to create a naturally beautiful finish.
The great thing about this treatment is that it can be completed in a single visit to Dr. Curtis Couch’s practice in Thousand Oaks, and can last for three to five years. It is important to note that unlike porcelain veneers or your natural tooth enamel, dental bonding can be more susceptible to staining and chips.
• Porcelain Veneers
For patients who are seeking an even more beautiful and luxurious cosmetic treatment, porcelain veneers are an ideal choice. Comprised of thin porcelain shells that are bonded directly to the front surfaces of teeth, this treatment can be used to mask chips, cracks, discolorations and discrepancies within your smile to create a naturally beautiful looking smile.
Porcelain resembles healthy, white tooth enamel, remarkably due to the fact that this material mimics the translucent properties of your natural enamel. This cosmetic treatment is highly resistant to future staining that can be caused by the consumption of coffee, tea and even cigarette stains.
In terms of strength, appearance and longevity porcelain veneers are unmatched when compared to other cosmetic dental procedures, and with good care can last up to a decade.
• Teeth Whitening
This cosmetic treatment is one of the more simple yet powerful tools to transform the appearance of your smile, and can visibly erase the discolorations caused by staining, aging and other lifestyle choices. Dr. Curtis Couch employs the latest bleaching technology in order to deliver a brilliantly white smile in a safe environment.
If you are looking for a swift, effective and inexpensive cosmetic treatment teeth whitening courtesy of Dr. Curtis Couch may be the ideal choice for you.

If so, you may be one of the 30 million Americans experiencing tooth sensitivity. So what causes tooth sensitivity? At Curtis R. Couch in Thousand Oaks, we are committed to educating patients about their oral health. As such we have compiled the top 5 reasons why you may be experiencing tooth sensitivity and how you can alleviate your pain.
5 reasons why you may experience tooth sensitivity
1. Receding gums and gingivitis: When your gums start to recede, little slivers of the tooth’s root dentin becomes exposed. Once they are exposed it can cause increasingly sensitivity. When gum tissue becomes inflamed and weakened from gingivitis (gum disease), you may feel tooth sensitivity because more of the underlying dentine root surface is exposed.
2. Damage to your tooth enamel: If your protective enamel gets eroded and the dentin loses protection, this can cause tooth sensitivity. To reduce your risk of eroding tooth enamel, try and steer clear of acidic drinks such as tea, coffee, wine (both red and white), soda, and carbonated drinks.
3. Tooth grinding and clenching: When you grind or clench your teeth, this puts a lot of pressure on the gums, causing them to eventually recede and wears down the enamel of your teeth. For those experiencing jaw clenching and teeth grinding this is known as TMD or (Temporomandibular joint dysfunction) which comes with it a host of uncomfortable symptoms. A night guard can dramatically relieve your symptoms and prevent you from grinding your teeth and also headaches that are associated with TMD.
4. Brushing too hard: brushing too vigorously and with a hard-bristled toothbrush can eventually wear down your protective tooth enamel. These can also cause receding gums, causing further exposure of the dentine that leads to tooth sensitivity.
How to reduce tooth sensitivity
A fluoride rinse can help decrease sensitivity, especially for people with decay problems. Use it once a day. Swish it around in your mouth and spit it out.
Follow a consistent oral hygiene program. Plaque, the white gummy substance that forms on teeth, produces an acid that irritates teeth, especially if your choppers are naturally sensitive. Wage a daily attack against plaque by brushing at least twice, preferably right after eating and especially before bed, and flossing at least once.
Use a soft toothbrush. Often, people actually cause tooth sensitivity by brushing with too much force and/or brushing with a hard-bristled brush. Using a brush with the softest bristles apply a small amount of pressure when brushing (a lighter touch also allows the bristles to move more freely around the crevices of your teeth than when you press too firmly.
Professionally treat tooth sensitivity
To alleviate tooth sensitivity, it is important to receive professional advice to determine the exact cause of your tooth pain. At Curtis R. Couch, we can conduct an oral assessment to determine which treatment option is most suitable for you.

At Curtis Couch D.D.S in Thousand Oaks, California, we place great emphasis on educating patients about good oral health and ways to maintain the health and integrity of their smile.
As such, in this article we have compiled a list of teeth tips that you should follow to keep your oral health in check.
Teeth tips for a healthy smile
Tip#1 Follow a consistent oral health regime – Did you know that adults over 35 lose more teeth to gum diseases (periodontal disease) than from cavities? 3 out of 4 adults are affected at some time in their life, but there is something we can do about it! The best way to prevent cavities and periodontal disease is by good tooth brushing and flossing techniques, performed daily. Periodontal disease and decay are both caused by bacterial plaque. Plaque constantly forms on your teeth. By thorough daily brushing and flossing you can remove these germs and help prevent periodontal disease. It is recommended to brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and floss your teeth at least once a day (or after every meal if possible) for good oral health.
Tip #2 Follow a tooth friendly diet – A healthy diet is not only essential to your overall health, but it is also essential to healthy teeth and gums. Recent confirmed that all foods and rinks which stimulate saliva productions are great at clearing the mouth of debris. Saliva provides a strong protective film to the teeth and helps to wash away and neutralise the damaging acids.
Foods that are healthy for your teeth include:
- Cheddar, Swiss and mozzarella
- Fruits and vegetables
- Wholegrain cereals
- Lean meats
In contrast, foods you should avoid consuming in high amounts include:
- Soft drinks
- Sodas and sports drinks
- Fruit juices
- Potato chips
- Savoury crackers
- Fruit snack bars
- Sweet biscuits
- Some breakfast cereals
- Dried fruit
Tip- #3 – Rinse or chew gum after meals. In addition to brushing and flossing, rinsing your mouth with an antibacterial rinse can help prevent decay and gum problems. Chewing sugar-free gum after a meal can also help protect your teeth by increasing saliva flow, which naturally washes bacteria away and neutralizes acid.
Tip#4 – use fluoride – The single biggest advance in oral health has been fluoride, which strengthens enamel, making it less likely to decay. Three out of four Americans drink water that is fluoridated. Many toothpastes and mouth rinses also contain fluoride.
Tip # 5 Avoid sugary foods. When bacteria in the mouth break down simple sugars, they produce acids that can erode tooth enamel, opening the door to decay. “Sugary drinks, including soft drinks and fruit drinks, pose a special threat because people tend to sip them, raising acid levels over a long period of time,” says Steven E. Schonfeld, DDS, PhD, a dentist in private practice and spokesperson for the American Dental Association. “Carbonated drinks may make matters worse, since carbonation also increases acidity.” Sticky candies are another culprit, because they linger on teeth surfaces.
Tip # 6 Don’t forget to visit us for your professional clean – While maintaining a regular oral health regime is important to maintain good oral health, brushing and flossing alone are not able to remove the build-up of plaque on our teeth. A professional clean every 6 months is the only way to remove plaque and tartar safely and effectively. At this appointment we will also perform a full mouth examination to prevent any dental problems from worsening during.

Do you fear going to the dentist? You’re not alone; in fact this fear is more common than you might think…
Did you know that approximately 75% of Americans are known to experience varying levels of fear and anxiety about visiting the dentist? And even more 5-10% develops a fear known as ‘Dentophobia’ or ‘dentist phobia’. The most common way people develop dental fears is through a direct experience. Most people who experience dental fear can report that their dental fear may have begun after a traumatic, difficult, or painful dental experience Here at Curtis R. Couch we pride ourselves on providing a calm and relaxed atmosphere that can put our patients at ease. Dr. Curtis R. Couch ensures he spends the extra time needed to develop a strong relationship with his patients to let them know they are in good hands. Whether your reservations about your upcoming dental appointment are mild or as extreme as the above phobias, sedation dentistry may be the treatment you need to calm your nerves and put you at ease during your visit. At Curtis R. Couch D.D.S in Thousand Oaks California we offer patients experiencing anxiety dental sedation options to help them relax during their visit.
Stay as cool as a cucumber…
Going to the dentist shouldn’t be scary, here at Curtis R. Couch D.D.S we ensure your visit is calm and relaxing every step of the way. However we understand that often some people have developed serious fears and phobias which may lead them to feel anxious or worried about their visit. With the use of sedation dentistry we can help you make through your treatment without too many worries.
There are two main reasons why we use sedation dentistry…
When prescribing sedatives in dentistry we tend to use them for two main reasons, one is the use during surgical or invasive procedures and the other, as mentioned prior, is for patients who experience a fear or phobia of the dentist and require assistance in order to relax during examinations and treatments. Here at Curtis R. Couch D.D.S we will aim to make every visit with us as comfortable as possible. This is why we are happy to offer Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) to our patients. When booking an appoint we recommended notifying our receptionists if you are nervous about visiting the dentist so that we can make all of the proper preparations. As for surgical procedures we often need to use sedation dentistry to help ensure our patients do not experience any discomfort during their treatment.
What is sedative will be used to put me at ease?
To comfort our patients we use nitrous oxide or laughing gas as the primary means of sedation. Nitrous oxide is completely safe as the patient receives 50-70% oxygen with no less than 30% nitrous oxide. You will be able to breathe on your own and remain in control of all bodily functions.
Nitrous Oxide is a sweet-smelling, non-irritating, colorless gas which is inhaled to calm patients and keep them comfortable during their dental treatment. If you’re worried about needles (as many patients are) it’s comforting to know that we will not require any needles to treat you with nitrous oxide.
Using nitrous oxide to ease your dental worries will ensure your visit is enjoyable and will put your fears or phobias at rest. Other benefits include:
- The depth of sedation can be altered at any time to increase or decrease sedation.
- You don’t have to worry about getting ‘sedation hangover’ as there is no after affect.
- Inhalation sedation is safe with no side effects on your heart and lungs, etc.
- Inhalation sedation is very effective in minimizing gagging.
- It works quickly as it reaches the brain within 20 seconds and within as little as 2-3 minutes its relaxation and pain killing properties develop.
*Note, for patients who have been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) nitrous oxide is not the recommended sedative.
This is why it is important when organizing your visit to Curtis R. Couch you inform our team of your current medical condition and we will prescribe you the most appropriate solution to help ensure you are comfortable during your appointment. Though there are no other major problems with using nitrous oxide, we do not highly recommend using it if you have emphysema, exotic chest problems, M.S., a cold or other difficulties with breathing. As previously mentioned, it is always important to call in advance to ensure we have a good understanding of what treatment will be best suited for you.
How will I feel after inhaling the gas and will I be able to drive myself home?
Nitrous Oxide affects everyone differently. It is primarily designed to make patients feel relaxed and calm throughout their procedure. While some patients report mild lightheadedness, slight hallucinations and uncontrollable laughter (hence the name) the sedative is safe and will wear off soon after your procedure. It’s important to remember that the effects will differ for each individual, although most patients commonly experience a feeling of calm.
You can drive home after having Nitrous Oxide however we do recommend waiting in our waiting room until you feel confident you are able and alert enough to drive. Nitrous oxide is a mild anesthesia so you may still wish to find a ride home just to be safe. It is also a good idea to ask your dentist for a five minute trial to see how you feel with this type of sedation method before proceeding. Here at Curtis R. Couch we recommend any patients considering using sedation dentistry to trial nitrous oxide before we use it during treatment.
The goal at Curtis R. Couch in Thousand Oaks is to ensure our patients are comfortable and relaxed during their trips to our office. If you experience dental phobia or even mild fears of going to the dentist and it is causing you to avoid the dental procedures you need to maintain your oral heath, than sedation dentistry may be the soothing help you need to get you through your dental checkups and procedures. Trips to the dentists shouldn’t be scary, but if you are struggling with your fears we ask that you do not avoid the dentists but let your phobia be put to rest with sedation dentistry.
Are you ready to straighten your smile? As an adult you might believe your options are quite limited but thanks to removable orthodontic options like Invisalign you can be able to change your smile without changing your lifestyle…
At Curtis R. Couch in Thousand Oaks it is not uncommon for us to receive visits from adult clients who are considering making a change for the better with orthodontic treatment. Our Invisalign treatment is often the most appropriate solution for adults looking to achieve a straighter smile however Dr. Curtis R. Couch can organize a formal assessment of each patient’s mouth to determine the best result how each individual.
We find that many adult patients have the same concerns about orthodontic treatment…
While braces and other orthodontic treatments are popular among kids and teenagers, the Invisalign treatment provides an option for adults to achieve a straighter smile without having to wear traditional metal braces. Many adult patients are hesitant about receiving orthodontic treatment later in life for a couple of reasons:
Q: Isn’t orthodontic treatment solely for teenagers and younger children?
It is a common misconception that orthodontic treatment is solely for children and teenagers; on the contrary, many adults can and have received orthodontic treatment with fantastic results. The only reason that many children and teenagers
Q: Can orthodontic treatment work on my adult teeth?
Yes. Orthodontic treatment can work on adult teeth, the only reason that young children and teenagers are urged to have their teeth straightened with orthodontic treatment is that the teeth are more likely to accept the changes that the treatment is instigating on their teeth. Adult teeth are permanent teeth but they are not unsusceptible to orthodontic change.
For adults who are considering orthodontic treatment that is easily integrated into their personal and professional lifestyle we suggest Invisalign, the virtually ‘invisible’ and removable orthodontic treatment.
The Invaslign treatment can discretely help you achieve a straighter smile…
An Invisalign treatment involves of a series of nearly invisible and removable aligners that you can change every two weeks in place of the next set of aligners. Each aligner is individually manufactured for your teeth, and your teeth only. As each aligner is replaced, your teeth can move until they have straightened to the final position prescribed by Dr. Curtis R Couch.
We can provide a virtual treatment plan for you to view your Invisalign treatment essentially allowing you to see upfront what your teeth are expected to look like at the end of the treatment. Dr. Curtis R Couch can develop an individual plan for your teeth and can assess your progress throughout the treatment. Invisalign is flexible and allows you to achieve a straighter smile without interrupting your life, other benefits are:
- Aligners can appear virtually invisible to those around you- which allows you to smile throughout your treatment
- Your aligners can be removed to eat, maintain your regular oral hygiene and for special occasions such as weddings, nights out and photographs
- Invisalign aligners are comfortable with no sharp metal edges to cut and irritate gums
Let Invisalign grant you the pleasure of gaining a straight smile without having to wear metal braces, for adults the treatment is ideal because you can wear your aligners without everyone noticing you have anything in your mouth at all!
We’re not getting any younger, so it’s important to take care of ourselves…
A treatment like Invisalign has benefits not just for aesthetic reasons but overall health as well. Having a straighter smile can allow you to feel more comfortable about your oral health and may give you a confidence boost when you feel proud to show off your new smile. By choosing to straighten your teeth you could be choosing to straighten your health as well…
Straight teeth provide better oral health and gum lines…
Swollen gums and redness can surface as a result of crowded teeth or teeth that are too widely spaced. Clinical studies have shown that teeth that are properly aligned help the gums fit tighter around the teeth, which can result in better gum health. And because you can brush and floss normally with Invisalign, unlike traditional metal braces, you can prevent tooth decay and related gum disease more effectively. One of best qualities about Invisalign is that it uses no metal bands, brackets, or wires that can trap food and plaque. The removable nature of Invisalign allows patients to maintain good oral hygiene, so you may also reduce the chance of plaque build-up, tooth decay and gum disease.
Improved chewing and thus nutrition….
Teeth that are misaligned make it awfully difficult to properly chew food; this can result in poor nutrition and eating habits. It can also lead to speech problems, which can cause you difficulty speaking and pronouncing certain words. Invisalign treatment can improve both of these problems by providing better-aligned teeth and jaws.
Relieve stress and regain your confidence…
Misaligned teeth and jaws can cause you stress, misaligned teeth may result in painful trauma to supporting bone and jaw joints. This can cause abnormal wear on your teeth, which can prompt continued problems in the future. Invisalign treatment can improve the alignment of your teeth and improve your bite. With less stress on your mouth and a smile that is straighter you can feel more confident smiling and feel less stress on your supporting jaw bone.
At Curtis R. Couch in Thousand Oaks we understand that as adults and professionals, traditional braces may not work with your lifestyle. Our Invisalign treatment may be the best solution to achieving a straighter smile. Dr. Curtis R. Couch can do a full assessment on your mouth to develop a plan that suits your mouth and lead you towards gaining your ideal smile. No longer are braces just for kids and teenagers, now with the innovative Invisalign treatment you can get straighter teeth without the hassle of metal bars and brackets. This is the ideal choice for adults and can not only help improve your smile but your overall health as well.
To ensure your mouth stays healthy for the foreseeable future there are some preventive methods to help decrease the risk of oral diseases…
At Curtis R. Couch D.D.S in Thousand Oaks California we pride ourselves on providing long term dental solutions rather than quick fixes that may need replaced in years to come. Following a regular oral hygiene routine and consistent checkups are part of maintaining your oral health. Did you know that adults over 35 years of age will lose more teeth to gum disease (periodontal disease) than from cavities? The most effective way to prevent cavities and periodontal disease is by applying good tooth brushing and flossing techniques, each and every day.
What is gum disease?
Gum disease is common, extremely common; in fact three out of four adults are affected by gum disease at some time in their life. The question is what are we doing about it? Periodontal disease and decay are both caused by bacterial plaque. Plaque constantly forms on your teeth. By thorough daily brushing and flossing you can remove these germs and help prevent periodontal disease.
Plaque is produced by secretions that are made by microscopic bacteria on your teeth. By avoiding strict oral hygiene regime you are allowing plaque to gather between your teeth in crevices, and also create hard tartar which is virtually impossible to remove without the assistance of a dentist.
There are two main stages of gum disease including gingivitis or gingival disease and periodontitis or periodontal disease (which can lead to the final and most severe stage where you may lose teeth and your gum line).
Tackle gingivitis to avoid further more serious gum disease…
Gingivitis always starts off with a buildup of plaque on your teeth. When starches and sugars in food interact with bacteria normally found in our mouths, plaque can is formed and if ignored can lead to gingivitis. Symptoms of gingivitis include:
- You may experience red o swollen gums
- Bleeding gums when brushing
- Teeth that look elongated as a result of receding gums
By following a regular oral hygiene routine you can reduce the amount of plaque in your mouth and keep you gingivitis under control so it won’t progress into periodontics. Brushing our teeth twice a day and flossing once a day will help remove unwanted plaque. Some important things to note about proper brushing techniques; don’t rush, spend at least two minutes brushing n small circles on the front, back and the chewing surfaces of the mouth. To get optimum brushing results tilt your brush up and down accordingly to your teeth and work the bristles under your gums. Ensure you don’t forget your tongue, you taste buds are like a landing pad for bacteria to grab onto, brushing your tongue removes these and will help freshen your breath.
If you’re past the stage of gingivitis you need to look into professional help to confront periodontitis…
When gingivitis is left untreated, it can develop into periodontitis or periodontal disease, which refers to inflammation around the tooth. In periodontitis, gums end up pulling away from the teeth and form spaces, called pockets that become infected. The body’s immune system fights the bacteria as the plaque spreads and grows below the gum line. Bacterial toxins and the body’s natural response to infection start to break down the bone and connective tissue that hold teeth in place. If not treated, the bones, gums, and tissue that support the teeth are destroyed. The teeth may eventually become loose and have to be removed, this is the most severe stage of gum disease and it could have been avoided with preventive at home care in the early stages.
While ignoring gingivitis can lead to periodontitis the following factors can also contribute to this disease:
- Clenching and grinding teeth
- Poor nutrition
Here at Curtis R. Couch we will work with patients suffering from poor oral hygiene to treat gingivitis and periodontal disease. We encourage patients to book regular appointments to ensure we can catch the signs of gingivitis in its earlier stages before it progresses into full blown periodontal disease.
What do I do if I have reached the stage where my teeth are falling out?
Here at Dr. Curtis R. Couch we offer restorative and cosmetic solutions for patients who are missing teeth as a result of severe periodontitis. Our implant dentistry treatment along with crown and bridge solutions can help you regain the teeth you lost from untreated periodontitis. These treatments will let you regain the ability to eat virtually anything and can smile with confidence, knowing that teeth appear natural and that your facial contours will be preserved. While these treatments can replace lost teeth their upkeep is similar to that of your natural teeth. This means if you still haven’t developed an effective oral hygiene routine you will be back to where you started. The most important thing you can do for your mouth is to maintain a routine that will keep your teeth clean and prevent further bacteria from building in your mouth and causing gum disease as described above.
At Dr. Curtis R. Couch in Thousand Oaks California we ensure your entire experience is customized and designed with your needs in mind. We understand the importance of creating long-lasting relationships with our patients, with our dental office focused on long term solutions we ensure that our relationships are built on care and most importantly trust to ensure our patients feel confident and comfortable with our services. Cell Phones Aren’t the Only Piece of Technology that is Advancing – The Dental Profession Gets Onboard with the Techno-Era
With new smartphones upgrading every couple of months we understand the importance of advancement and staying modern with technology…
It is extremely important to keep up-to-date with new advancements in the medical and dental profession to ensure treatments are efficient and top grade against competitors. Here at Curtis R. Couch D.D.S in Thousand Oaks California we make sure we keep our practice up-to-date with the latest technology to ensure we provide our patients with the best products in the business.
New dental technology such as digital imaging and X-rays along with new laser dentistry innovations has allowed the profession to advance and offer treatments that save you time and provide better results. Today’s advanced dental treatments and materials offer our patients a healthier, more complete smile that can last a lifetime. Our practice can help revitalize and maintain our patient’s teeth and gums, giving you the smile you’ve always wanted.
We are digital at Curtis R. Couch…
Today digital cameras are used for capturing our memorable moments and now the dental profession is capturing our oral health with the use of digital technology, except this technology is so advanced it let us do more than just capture a photo of your mouth. We have joined the world of digital imaging to ensure we have a more accurate vision of your mouth to use during diagnosis. Radiographs allow us to all the things we cannot see with our own eyes. They permit us to detect cavities in between your teeth, determine bone level, and analyze the health of your bone. With radiographs we can also examine the roots and nerves of your teeth, diagnose lesions such as cysts or tumors, as well as assess damage when trauma occurs. Compared to traditional radiography, with digital imaging, exposure time is about fifty percent less.
With our digital X-rays we are able to view our images on a much larger surface than ever before. Now that we are able to view the image on a computer monitor, instead of holding up a 35mm film up to the light, digital X-rays result in less of the radiation exposure to you.
Scared of needles? We’ve got new technology for that too…
Laser dentistry is one of the dental profession’s latest advances. It works by delivering energy in the form of light. We can use lasers at Dr. Curtis R. Couch for enamel, decay, gum tissue, or whitening enhancers. Laser dentistry can be used for both tooth and soft tissue related procedures. Unlike dental drills, with laser dentistry there is no heat or vibration, making the procedure more comfortable for most patients. Lasers can also be used to diagnose cavities. They can find hidden decay in teeth in early stages, and in some cases the decay can be reversed through hygiene and fluoride treatment and may never need filling.
Areas of dental care that benefit from laser technology:
- Cavity diagnosis and removal
- Curing, or hardening, bonding materials
- Whitening teeth
- Periodontal, or gum related, care
- Apthous Ulcer treatment (canker sore)
- Frenectomy (tongue-tie release) without anesthesia or sutures
- Root canals and apicoectomies
- Crown lengthening, gingivectomy and other gum corrections
- Dental lasers have been shown to be safe and effective for treating children and adults
For patients who are concerned about needles, drilling, or numbness our new laser technology will give you comfort in knowing there is an alternative to traditional techniques involved with needles and drills. Is it safe to put a laser in my mouth? If the dental laser is used according to the accepted practices by a trained practitioner, then it is just as safe as other dental instruments, at Dr. Curtis R. Couch we ensure we follow all professional standards and use best practice. However, just as you wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from prolonged exposure to the sun, when we perform a laser procedure, you will be asked to wear special eyeglasses to protect your eyes from the laser. Laser technology allows us to achieve desired results without using old time consuming and painful instruments that are now considered dated.
I wish I could see what my dentist was doing…
Now you can! Dr. Curtis R. Couch uses an intraoral camera (which is a very small camera – in some cases, just a few millimeters long) to look inside the tight areas of your mouth. An intraoral camera allows us to view clear, precise images of your mouth, teeth and gums, in order for us to accurately make a diagnosis. As a result this clear, defined, enlarged image, we can see details that may be missed by standard mirror examinations used in the past. What this means for our patients is faster diagnosis with less chair-time! Intra oral cameras also enable us to save your images in our office computer to provide a permanent record of treatments. Dr. Curtis R. Couch will show you the images and explain in detail about the problem areas and give you a better understanding of your mouth.
We also use microscopes that are similar to the ones an ophthalmologist (eye doctor) uses, which enables us to create dental restorations with an incredibly precise fit and finish. Many dentists use air-driven hand-pieces or drills. While acceptable for many procedures, air powered hand pieces all have a degree of non-concentricity; they do not rotate perfectly smoothly. The microscopes used here at Dr. Curtis R. Couch ensure we can complete clean and precise procedures.
